Many people had cavity wall insulation put into their homes in the belief it would make their properties more energy efficient and save them money.

It can come as a surprise that installing cavity wall insulation could make your home more damp.

The cavity in your walls is designed to provide a shield to prevent external moisture affecting the inner wall adjoining your internal structure. If the cavity is incorrectly filled with insulation then external moisture could get into the cavity and make its way across the insulation and cause damp internally.

Some installers cut corners and fail to fully insulate the wall cavity leaving gaps . These gaps or ‘voids’ can cause cold spots to form in front of them which attract moisture. This can then lead to damp patches and mould internally.
